You might want to checkout the maintenance schedules used by the KTM RTW guys I on ADVrider’s epic ride threads. That guy goes a long way before complete rebuilds. Also checkout the Rolling Hobo. He’s a respected KTM 500 RTW type rider from Germany with a website that’s a good resource. I like his 30 hour oil change interval.
Spud786. When dealing with ktm parts, you not only have to consider (wear), but that they make stuff so light and thin, Metal fatigue is a much stronger issue than wear. But as Long as the air filtration is good, and you warm the motor of well, and change the oil as recommended, up to 500 hours is pretty safe. Different service intervals may apply in your country, depending on the local operating conditions. Individual service intervals and scopes may change in the course of technical developments. The most up-to-date service schedule can always be found on KTM Dealer.net. Your authorized KTM dealer will be happy to advise you. Page 51: Recommended Work Oil Change Frequency - KTM 450 EXC 2009 The recommendation of KTM "full synthetic oil and change it every 15 hours with the filter. I change it every 20 hours with the filter, and use ELF MOTO 4 XT TECH 10W50, never a problem. 1- Wich is your Oil Change Frequency? 2- Do you change always the filter each time? 3- Wich Oil are you using? The Owners Manual shows 15 hr oil change intervals. Some guys do just a drain (no filters/screens) at 15, then '03 KTM 450 EXC '02 KTM 640 LC4e '01 Honda XR650R
I do not think a blanket statement like this works for everyone. But I do agree most people change their oil to often. If you took the above for a 450+ bike- then took time away for conditions (heat, dust) riding style (reving it to the moon or lugging) Did you spent the day slipping the clutch in tight single track, you can extend the interval.

Feb 4, 2004. Oddometer: 1,590. Location: Eastern YahooLand. Markozero, I rode a dual sport ride at the last of October last year in Colorado and Utah with a bunch of "dual sport" bikers (think 400+ pound porkers Vs. my 250 pound 500). Between 55 and 70 there is almost zero vibration on my 500. Posted July 3, 2017. Only had new KTM last years, never had to change or adjust valves. 2013 SXF 450: 107h before piston change, a bit overtime. 167h before i sold it. Piston 3 was then mounted. 2014 SXF 450: 65h. For both bikes, oil changes every 3-4 hrs, trans oil changes every 8 hrs max, oil filter every 15 hrs, clean the airfilter after ever ride, check valves every now and then, replace piston/rings every 30 or so hrs for performance but for safety every 70-80 hrs (some people go more) Cost: for oil changes, the Shell Rotella T 15w40 is cheap and The shop told me to change the oil every 300 miles and I just did my first 300 mile oil change. However, the oil came out pretty, clear and red just like the fresh oil I was about to replace it with. The shop also said if I was on the street most of the time that I could change the screens and filters every other oil change but to clean the And we learned during our own testing that it goes on and comes off easily, a good thing given the shorter oil-change intervals on the KTM 500 EXCs. Cycra Probend Handguards & BRP Mounts. In stock form the KTM 500 EXC comes with flimsy plastic handguards that aren’t going to protect your fingers, or levers, in a crash.
The KTM Quick Release poly skid plate, makes for very easy oil changes, if you don't ride an area with a lot of jagged rocks. I just put the 13L tank on my bike - now it is a 2 bolt affair to remove both the tank and seat to gain access to the head. Easy as pie. #13. jbrownmxr , Feb 19, 2008.
Posted April 25, 2013. People with 500 exc's are running their top ends with more then 200 hours with only oil changes. Not even bothering does valve checks. Just clean the air filter and change the oil and you'll be fine for at least a 2-3 hundred hours! A 450 EXC is a great enduro/woods bike but not a good candidate for a dual sport that will do any amount of "street" mileage. Been there, done that, sold my '04 after about 8 months. I now have an XR650 for the dual sport role, much more enjoyable on extended road trips. And a KTM 2 stroke for serious woods riding. LEne.
